The new energy crisis – How the Baltic States are defying the oil-price shock
The development is dramatic. Since January 2007, the price of a barrel of crude oil (157 litres) has leapt up from 58 to at times over 100 US-dollars. Experts believe that it could double again in the next ten years. This is having enormous effects on the purchasing countries. The prices for basic foodstuffs already rose drastically in Germany. In the wake of the oil and the natural gas linked to it in price, electricity suppliers are also asking for higher prices. Businesses dependent on energy, such as the metal-processing industry, are particularly in danger of suffering setbacks on the world market – a new energy crisis.
