Baltic Media Forum – a platform of ideas and projects
20 years after the political change in Europe a close network of economical, political, social and cultural contacts connects the countries of the Baltic Sea area with each other. But how deep is the change really? A common impression: The region is still looking for a joint identity.

Workshop about the Baltic Sea area of the „Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung” in Kiel
In cooperation with the BSF the Konrad-Adenauer- Foundation invited to a workshop to support highly talented scholars themed “Dominium Maris Baltici” from 25th to 29th August 2010 in Kiel. The workshop was focused on the conflict of the multidimensional history of the Baltic Sea area. The uniting idea was the view of the Baltic Sea area as a region between conflict and cooperation from the middle ages to the present. The participants were scholars of the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation who study at universities in northern Germany.

Baltic Sea evening workshop
Together with the Northern Business School, Hamburg, the BSF invited to the traditional evening forum in the Helmut Schmidt University Hamburg on the 14th September 2010. Distinguished guest was the Swedish ambassador Ruth Jacoby, her topic: “The future of the Baltic Sea – Baltic Sea strategy, how it´s going to be moving on?”

The Baltic Sea region in the focus of the United Nations in Melbourne
To the 63rd anniversary of the United Nations in Melbourne (Australia) the UNO has carried out the congress “Advance Global Health” from the 30th August to the 2nd September 2010 on which mostly nongovernmental initiatives, foundations and organizations took part. For the first time one topic was the Baltic Sea region and the Baltic Sea Forum (BSF) was asked to do a workshop under the special direction of Dr Gabriele Kötschau (member of the BSF) to talk about the Baltic Sea as model region.

19th Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference (BSPC)
The Baltic Sea Forum took part in 19th Baltic Sea Parliamentary Conference (BSPC) on the 29th to 31st August 2010 in Mariehamn (Åland Islands). This congress from the Baltic Sea parliamentarians assembles annually in changing locations of the Baltic Sea area..

Renewable energies in Finland
Under the headline “Renewable energies in Finland – Chances for investors on an innovative market / New technologies for the good of the environment” the Baltic Sea Forum together with the German-Finish Chamber of Commerce and the consulate general of Finland Hamburg carried out an expert conference on the congress “HUSUM WindEnergy” in September 2010. Mr. Uwe Döring, former minister of state and member, representative of the Baltic Sea Forum, opened the congress with an introduction about the “Energy market Baltic Sea area”.

Maritime markets in autumn 2010
On 28th and 29th September, the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) invited to the Maritime Conference 2010 in Bremen. With the topic “Maritime markets in autumn 2010 - Like a phoenix from the ashes?” specialized speakers introduced actual perspectives, strategies and trends of the most important maritime branches.

Majority refused – Sweden has elected
In the third biggest abutting nation of the Baltic Sea more than 6 million Swedish electors in 5,668 election areas on the 19th September 2010 have brought great perplexity to the policy finally. Despite a high turnout (82.1 percent) none of the two big blocks was able to reach the majority of 175 seats in the Riksdag. Prime Minister Frederik Reinfeldt of the conservative government coalition missed the majority with two seats curtly.

Turning point in Latvia - the other way round
In 2nd October 2010 1.5 million Latvian citicens were asked to vote in their parliamentary election. Almost a dozen parties applied for the 100 seats in the “Saeima”; winner was the conservative coalition “entity” (Vienotība) of the acting Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovski who is one of the youngest heads of government in Europe, merely 39 years “old”. At a turnout of 62.6 percent his alliance reached 30.7 percent of the votes closely followed from the rather Russian coined “Centre of Harmony”.

“Baltic Sea totally free from sewage”?
Various media reported this news quoting WWF office in Stralsund, Germany, as from October 4th 2010. According to this source the Environment Committee of the World Shipping Organization IMO ruled on October 1st in London cruise liners and ferries wouldn’t allowed to discharge sewage into the Baltic Sea longer. The WWF said that this should happen step by step beginning in 2013 for new constructed ships and for all vessels from the year 2018 on. The IMO in that way reacted to complaints of Baltic Sea countries and many environmental organisations.
